Exploring Easter in Crete ✝

One of the best times to visit Chania is during the Holy Week, which is the week leading up to Orthodox Easter Sunday. This is a time when the city comes alive with traditional celebrations and delicious foods, making it the perfect time to experience the unique culture of our island.

Experiencing Holy Week in Chania is a must. The city is home to some of the oldest and most beautiful Byzantine churches in Greece, and during Holy Week, these churches come alive with the sound of Byzantine chant and the scent of incense. The faithful come together to celebrate the most important holiday in the Greek Orthodox calendar, a time of both solemn reflection and joyous celebration.

One of the highlights of Holy Week in Chania is the Epitaph procession, which takes place on the evening of Good Friday. This is a solemn and moving event, during which a decorated bier representing Christ’s tomb is carried through the streets by the faithful. The procession is accompanied by a band playing traditional music, and the scent of flowers and incense fills the air. The Epitaph takes place in every church of the city, where the faithful gather to mourn and pray.

On Holy Saturday, visitors can attend a special mass in any of Chania’s beautiful Byzantine churches. During this service, the church is lit by candlelight, and the faithful participate in a symbolic journey from darkness to light, as they wait for the Resurrection of Christ. When the clock ticks 12:00 midnight, the priest announces that the Christ has risen, the Holy Fire is shared with everyone attending and fireworks fill the sky! Afterwards, people gather with their families at home and have a traditional supper with joy and love, highlighting the dish of “Magiritsa” (a soup made from lamb offal and herbs) which is always present. Moreover, the breaking of red-dyed eggs takes place, which is a symbolic gesture that represents the breaking of Christ’s tomb. This is one of the most important traditions of our Easter.

Finally, Easter Sunday is a time of joyous celebration, as the faithful gather in yards and town squares to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. The air is filled with the sound of church bells and traditional music, and both the city and the surrounding villages come alive with festivities and happy people. The most traditional dish for this day is the spit-roasted lamb. After 4-6 hours of slow roast in the open air, it becomes a delicacy that melts in your mouth. That’s why everyone loves it!

Last but not least, we shouldn’t forget “Tsoureki”, the official treat of Easter. It consists of sweet bread flavored with mahlab, topped with red-dyed eggs. Tsoureki is also a great snack for breakfast during this joyous period.
